Challenge your students to creatively solve the following problems related to National Noodle Day.
Kindergarten – 2nd Grade:
Provide students with time to color the image, then take a class vote regarding favorite noodle dishes. Then complete the questions.
Use Table 1 to record the results of the class vote.
1. Create a bar graph to represent the number of votes for each noodle dish.
2. Which noodle dish received the least number of votes?
3. What is the difference between the number of students who voted for Ramen Soup and the number of students who voted for Macaroni and Cheese?
3rd – 5th Grade:
1. The longest noodle ever recorded by Guinness World Records is a single ramen noodle with a length of 3,776 meters long. The second longest noodle is 3,083 meters long. What is the difference between the lengths of the noodles? Use words and numbers to support your decision.
2. Nate is hosting a dinner to celebrate national noodle day. There will be 10 people attending his dinner (including Nate). Nate needs to purchase the noodles for his dinner. One small box of spaghetti noodles has 16 ounces and costs $1.25. A large box of spaghetti noodles has 32 ounces and cost $2.80. Nate needs 3 ounces of spaghetti noodles for each person. Which box or boxes of spaghetti do you suggest Nate buy and what is the total cost? Use words and numbers to support your answer to show that Nate has enough spaghetti for all his guests.
3. One serving of spaghetti with meat sauce is ¾ of a cup. How many cups of spaghetti with meat sauce is needed for 12 people? Use words and numbers to support your decision.
6th – 8th Grade:
Use the following statistic to answer questions 1 and 2: A recent study showed that 23% of middle school age students said that mac and cheese is their favorite comfort food.
1. How many students in your class would also need to say that mac and cheese is their favorite comfort food to be consistent with this statistic? Justify your answer.
2. Is this statistic representative of your class? Justify your answer.
3. Chicken noodle soup is terrific when someone is feeling under the weather. It is suggested to have ¾ cup of noodles per serving. Bonnie has 14 cups of noodles. She claims that she can make 10 servings of chicken noodle soup. Do you agree or disagree with Bonnie’s claim?
High School:
1. It is reported that just over 5 billion servings of instant noodles (ramen packets) are consumed in the US each year. The average price per packet is 60¢. Josh claims that this represents over $30 million in revenue each year. Do you agree or disagree with Josh’s claim? Justify your decision.
2. Kotoyamen Ramen sells one bowl of ramen soup for $22. The total expenses for labor and ingredients are $7 per bowl. In one week, the restaurant sold 85 bowls of ramen soup. What is their revenue for this soup? Justify your answer.
3. The classic noodle question: Given n number of cooked noodles in a dish, randomly select two loose ends and tie them together. Continue the process of selecting and tying two loose ends together until all noodle ends are tied to one other noodle. What is the probability that all noodle ends are tied to another loose end in such a way that it forms a circle or loop?
The function: can be used to model the probability f(n) based on (n) number of noodles. What number of noodles are needed for the probability to be greater than 50%? Justify your decision.
