Enjoy these constructed response questions focusing on trick or treating with your students.
Kindergarten – 2nd Grade:
Give students time to color the image, then answer the questions as a class.

1. How many treats have spilled out of the bag?
2. There are a total of 50 treats in the bag. How many treats can you not see?
3. There are 50 treats in Sam’s bag. Sam is allowed to have 5 treats each day. (no more). The first 3 days Sam eats all 5 of the treats. But then on days 4, 5, and 6 Sam only eats 2 treats each day. How many treats are left? In Sam’s bag? Use words and numbers to support your answer.
3rd – 5th Grade:
1. Nate has 320 pieces of candy from trick or treating. His parents say he can only have 5 pieces of candy each day. Nate claims that his candy will last past New Years Day. Do you agree or disagree with Nate’s claim? Use words and numbers to support your answer.
2. Abi and Kai are sisters. After trick or treating, they combine their treats into one pile. Then they take turns selecting their favorite treats. This year they have a total of 535 pieces of candy. Abi wants the largest candy bar and is willing to only take 260 pieces leaving Kai with the rest. Is this fair? Use words and numbers to support your decision.
3. Angie and Rubio have 2 hours to trick or treat. Together they collected an amazing 630 pieces of candy. What is the average number of pieces of candy per minute of trick or treating? Use words and numbers to support your answer.
6th – 8th Grade:
1. Dustin went trick or treating for 2 hours. He visited 350 houses and received 425 pieces of candy. Which rate is greater: Dustin’s house per minute OR Dustin’s candy per minute during trick or treating? Justify your answer.
2. Mark is hosting a Halloween party for his friends. He is making dirt pudding cups with gummy worms. Each cup requires ¼ cup of pudding, 1/8 cup of chocolate cookie crumbs and 2 gummy worms. Complete the table to tell the amount of each ingredient Mark needs to make 32 pudding cups.
3. Last year Roger collected a total of 3.5 pounds of candy. This year he collected 3.9 pounds of candy. Determine the percent increase in the amount of candy Roger collected while trick or treating. Justify your answer.
High School:
1. Josiah is preparing to pass out candy for Halloween. Children can trick or treat between 6 pm and 8 pm. He has a total of 1000 pieces of candy. Generally, trick or treaters arrive every 30 seconds. Josiah claims that he has sufficient candy for every trick or treater to receive 2 pieces of candy. Do you agree or disagree with Josiah’s claim? Justify your decision.
2. Natalie has determined from previous years that she can trick or treat in her neighborhood at a rate of 3.75 houses per minute. This allows time to walk between homes, and to wait if there happens to a line. She only has 90 minutes to trick or treat. On average, each house gives 1.5 pieces of candy. There are 260 homes participating in trick or treating this year. Natalie claims that she has enough time to go to every house in her neighborhood and will get nearly 400 pieces of candy. Do you agree or disagree with Natalie’s claims? Justify your answer.
3. Anthony is selecting his bag to go trick or treating. Option 1 is to use a pillowcase (shaped like a cylinder) that is 30 inches long and has an opening that is 18 inches wide. Option 2 is to use a gift bag that is in the shape of a rectangular prism that measures 16 inches tall, 5 inches deep and 12 inches wide. Which option provides greater space to maximize Anthony’s trick or treating? Justify your answer.
